So, a few weeks ago we were heading out of town and wouldn’t you know it, our stroller died 2 days before we were heading out. The closing mechanism snapped, so we could no longer close it. And anyone who’s traveled with a toddler or baby knows that a stroller is a must when marching through an airport. I mean, you pretty much look like the Beverly Hillbillies with everything stacked up on top…car seat, diaper bag, carry on bag, pocketbook, laptop, etc.
This is when panic set in for us. Well, when I say us, I really mean me. So I jump online and start looking at strollers, reading reviews and checking prices. We knew we didn’t want yet another big-ass stroller. Our son just turned two and he’s getting a lot more independent, plus it’s just too damn heavy to lift in and out of the trunk. I’m starting to look like the hulk. This, my friends, is how we ended up with an umbrella stroller.
The main things that I was looking for were:
A) tall enough for both me and my husband (I’m freakishly tall for a woman and my husband is above average as well),
B) good turning radius,
C) easy close and open mechanism,
D) large storage compartment underneath, that’s also easy to get to, and
E) an adult cupholder.
Maybe I should’ve put cupholder first on my list because when I say that this is an important feature for me, I mean REALLY important. My friends and family can attest to this….you’ll almost never find me without a Diet Coke in my hand. And trying to push a stroller with one hand, hold a Diet Coke in the other hand, AND talk on the phone is pretty difficult. Not impossible, mind you, just difficult.
So how, do you ask, did I end up with a stroller that has no adult cupholder? Well let me tell you….the packaging suckered me in. The Joovy Kooper is really cool looking. It came in several different colors, all totally cool, but we picked the lime. Maybe we were sticking with a trend…my son’s bedroom is lime green, and at least half of the accessories in my kitchen are lime green. I can’t seem to resist anything that’s lime green. This is not to say that the stroller is bad. Not by any means. I actually like it a lot. There’s just a few things that I would tell the Joovy people to tweak on their next go-round.
PROS:
- Cool looking
- Lots of cool color choices (red, black, lime & brown to name a few)
- It has the ease of an umbrella stroller but it doesn’t look like one
- Wicked large canopy/sun shade (a huge deal if you have a pinkish white child, like I do)
- Large basket underneath that’s also easy to get to (removable too!)
- Fully reclinable (I never use this…my son doesn’t sleep anywhere except his bed or his carseat)
- Rubber wheels, so it’s nice and quiet
- Large pockets for Mom and Dad to put their cellphone, etc.
- Price
CONS:
- When we first took it out of the box the front wheels were hard to turn so we had to lube em’ up (they work fine now)
- NO ADULT CUP HOLDER (I can’t help but shake my head as I write this). They don’t even make one that you can buy and attach on your own!
All in all I’d definitely recommend this to friends that are in the market for an umbrella stroller. I mean, probably not good for smaller babies who still need the snack tray in front of them, and the 5-point harness, but awesome if your child is 18 months+.
