Product: Kid Trax Red Fire Engine
Purchased at: Walmart.com
Price: $341.99
Recommend: Probably not

My son received this as a birthday gift this past June, when he turned 2.  My dad and I both did tons and tons of research before deciding that this was the vehicle we were going to get.  My son is really tall, so we wanted to pick something that he’d fit into and not outgrow in a few months.  This Kid Trax red fire engine really seemed to fit the bill.  He loves fire engines, it’s big enough for 2 kids, it has a working/squirting hose, a loud speaker, and bells & whistles too!  What could be more perfect?!

Well, apparently, a lot of things could have been more perfect.  The working hose really doesn’t hold more than a cup of water, so after a few pumps you have to fill it up again.  And before you squirt it you have to pump it by hand…not something that a small kid would be able to do on their own.  Yeah, maybe a 6 or 7 year old, but definitely not for a 2 yr old.  My other complaint is the gas pedal.  When you step on it the fire truck jerks really bad and gives my poor son whiplash (practically).  It gives him such a startle every time that he automatically pulls his foot off the gas pedal.

I do have to say though, that he loves the whistle and siren, as well as the loudspeaker.  For the most part, right now, he just sits in it in the garage, and plays with the buttons.  Maybe in a year or two he’ll have grown into it a little more and he won’t be so freaked out about getting whiplash.  :o)

Note: My parents purchased this online at Walmart.com, but I can’t seem to find it there anymore.

The only places that I was able to find it was:
Ebay, for $399.99, and
Amazon.com, for  $484.01

PROS:

  • Large enough to fit larger children
  • Working emergency lights & siren
  • Easy to put together

CONS:

  • Not very smooth gas pedal action
  • Fire hose doesn’t hold much water & requires manual pumping after each squirt
  • Price

Would I recommend this to friends and family?  Probably not.  I’d say go for one of the less expensive ones.  The bells and whistles on this one really don’t make the extra price worth it in the long run.

Would it seem better if Grammy and Grampy purchased it?

Be prepared, by the time he does get to ride it, the battery will go dead and you won’t be able to find a replacement! I have ran into 4 people now, just from searching for a replacement battery that cannot find one and have put their fire engine up for sale!!!! If you know of a place to buy one, let me know.

Thanks

Thanks Vickie! I think we actually just encountered that problem. When my son puts his foot on the gas pedal nothing happens except for a clicking noise. My husband was assuming that meant the battery needed to be replaced. And we’ve only had it for 6 months!
