Some people are huge fans of Melissa & Doug thing. Personally, I think it’s a backlash against all the plastic toys out there. They look prettier, or something to that effect. That’s all well and good in my book. But what it really boils down to for me is that my son enjoys playing with it. So when my son was given this as a gift (along with the Melissa & Doug Pizza Party toy) I was stoked to check them out.
They’re really well made and could probably last a lifetime. Or at least for as long as your kids are interested in them. There was one thing that I didn’t like about them, however. Well two, if you count the pricetag as one. The second thing is the velcro on the back of each piece. My son’s playroom is carpeted, so I was constantly pulling pieces of Melissa & Doug toys off the carpet. If you’ve got wood floors, or if your kids will be playing on tables, then it’s really no biggie.
PROS:
- Well made wooden toys
- Look better than plastic toys
- Pretty indestructible
CONS:
- Pricetag (if you can find used ones on Ebay or Craigslist it’s worth it!)

Krissy,
These look like a lot of fun, and I encourage you to change over to real food as early as three. Soft food and a table knife, then cooked food, then raw…of course supervision is required – but can’t start too early turning those kids into competent prep chefs.
