Nintendo DSLite

Nintendo DSLite

Product: Nintendo DSLite
Purchased: Given to me by my niece
Recommend: Yes

Let me start by explaining that I have never been, nor will I ever be, a gamer.  Even when i was a kid, at the dawn of civilization, I never got into PacMan, Tetris and all those other games that my friends loved to play at the roller skating rink.  But recently I was watching TV and I saw a commercial for Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box, and the Nintendo DS Lite.  Oooooo…..very interesting.  It almost looked like something that might be fun.  Possibly.  If I was really bored, and had nothing better to do.

So I started watching used NDSL’s on Ebay because there was no way that I was going to pay full price for a gaming device that I was going to use once, decide that yes, I still hate gaming, and put it away and never to be seen again.  My top bid price, that I came up with arbitrarily, was $25.00.  And that had to include the shipping.  Cheap, I know.  But if I couldn’t win one for that price then it wasn’t meant to be.  Then something miraculous happened.  The gaming gods smiled down on me, in the form of my awesome niece Cali.  She had recently gotten a Nintendo DSi and wasn’t using her DSLite anymore, so she gave it to me.  Awe-Some!

Professor Layton

Professor Layton

Step 2 – Find a game!  Since Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box was the only game I had seen so far that looked interesting I started looking for it on Ebay.  In stores it sells for $29.99.  Ahhhh…No, I don’t think so.  So I started looking for other games that I might like.  That’s when I stumbled upon Mahjong Quest.  I’ve actually played Mahjong before online and loved it.  It’s one of those mindless games that you don’t really have to use your brain for.  You can just chill out, get in the zone, and kill an hour.  Or 10.  Thousand.  But who’s counting.

When I was able to win an auction for $8.00 I thought to myself, I am about to embark upon a new and exciting journey.

If I had a soundtrack, you’d now be hearing a car screeching to a halt and crashing into a fence.  That’s because on the day that the game showed up in the mailbox I excitedly ran into the house, threw down the rest of the mail and ripped open the package.  Next, I popped the game into my NDSL.  Annnndddd….nothing.  Nothing at all.  So I popped the game back out, looked at it questioningly, then put it back in again.  Cue music.  Annnndddd….nothing.  Oh crap.  That’s when I pick up the phone and call the Customer Service Dept. otherwise known as my 10 yr old niece Cali.  She tells me it’s supposed to start automatically.  Oh fudge.  Did I just get taken for a ride on the Ebay express?

Now I pack up my Nintendo, and my game and schlep myself down the street to my next door neighbor, Logan’s house.  He’s a total badass, kickass Nintendo player.  And yeah, so maybe he’s 8.  But he’s an expert, and that’s what counts when you’re having a crisis.  And of course he fixed it in approximately 60 seconds.  That boys’ a genius!  Apparently blowing on games helps them start.  Who knew?!  And to top it off, he let me borrow one of his games to check out – Brain Age 2.  He said it’s hard, but hey, he’s 8 and I’m…..well, let’s just say that I’m old enough to have hung out in roller skating rinks.  So this should be a piece of cake.  Right?  Wrong.  Apparently my brain age is negative 10.

So do I love my Nintendo DSLite?  Yes, yes I do.  No more twiddling my thumbs when I’m sitting in the doctor’s office, or waiting in line at the DMV.  Now I can bring my new BFF along with me to keep my company.

EVERYONE knew that blowing on the game would work. That’s how you troubleshoot all Nintendo games since the dawn of time!

I used to have a DS Lite. It was given to me by my family for father’s day about 3 years ago. Except, uh, well, it effectively belongs to my wife now because she plays it when she is doing the hurry up and wait thing. She finished the first Professor Layton game if you’d like to borrow it. She loved it. And there are many more games around here you’re welcomed to try if you’re interested.

I’ve asked for a DS for Christmas the last 2 years. Maybe this year is my year. Glad to hear another grown up likes it.
